What is the Kaleidoscope curriculum?

Curriculum is a broad term.  It includes all activities, how and why they are done, the order in which they are done and how classrooms are organized.

Our curriculum is a flexible one.  It is not a rigid pre-set "cookbook" curriculum.  Kaleidoscope staff members are like really good cooks that create their own recipes for success.  We make sure that good "ingredients" are provided and that they follow standards of appropriate practice for preschool children.
Monthly lesson plan with parent input are always available for you to look at in the classroom.  They use themes and a wide variety of challenging, fun and interesting activities.
Most parents want their children to learn about letters and numbers.  We do too, but there are many different ways to learn about them.  Your child is exposed to letters, words, and numbers in a variety of early math, reading and writing activities.  Naming and writing the individual letters and numerals comes eventually, but at different times for different children.

We provide “print rich” environments with books, charts, signs, labels and other printed materials.  This helps children see and use letters and numbers in a purposeful way every day.  Many writing tools are offered.  Use of crayons, markers, paintbrushes, pencils and chalk all help develop skills that eventually enable children to recognize and write letters.  Writing “grows” out of drawing.  We read, tell and sing stories.  Adults write down what children say and encourage them to write in their own way to help them learn there is a connection between speaking and writing.

Children don’t learn about numbers just by learning the names of numerals.  They need to work with sets of objects.  Counting, sorting, ordering and patterning are some of the important things to do with objects that help children really understand math.

Our complete handbook is available in the Newsletter link to the left.
