Educational Background
Angela Smith graduated from Western Michigan University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology with a minor in chemistry. She also attended St. Mary’s College of Notre Dame, Indiana, acquiring a secondary education certificate in biology and chemistry. She obtained her middle school teaching license from Indiana University of South Bend. Angie began her teaching career in 1998 at Lake Michigan Catholic High School and came to St. Mary of the Lake in 2003.
Angie has worked as an Education Director for the Boys and Girls Club of Benton Harbor, Michigan, providing computer class instruction and after-school academic reinforcement. Additionally, Angie taught for Winning Inc., an after-school and summer program for Benton Harbor students. This state funded program works to remediate and improve reading and science skills for elementary students. Angie also taught at Western Michigan University for their Upward Bound Program. This summer program offers high school students the opportunity to advance in their core classes.
Outside of the academic realm, Angie has coached junior high and junior varsity volleyball teams, junior high cheerleading, and worked as a Gymnastics Coordinator and Instructor for the YMCA Family Center, St. Joseph, Michigan.
Angie loves the welcoming, supportive, and caring community here at St. Mary of the Lake church and school. She enjoys challenging our students in and out of the classroom with activities such as the Berrien County Science Olympiad and Science Fair competitions. In the Science Fair competition we have consistently taken a majority of the awards home to New Buffalo. In 2007, not only did St. Mary’s bring home plenty of first, second and third place awards, but also the Grand Champion Prize. The emphasis for these activities is placed on participation rather than winning, and Angie recognizes every student for their hard work, nurturing their interest through her love of science.
Angie is comfortably at home at St. Mary of the Lake, residing in New Buffalo with her husband Nathan (a former St. Mary of the Lake student) and growing family.
